Hackathon

Hackathon hosted by

March 25-26, 2019 in Graz

Connecting the real and the digital world

Infineon is inviting to a 24+ hour hackathon organized together with Silicon Alps Cluster at Messe Congress Graz.
About 50 participants will create drone, sensors, and blockchain prototypes.

What is a hackathon?
A hackathon has been described as a problem-focused computer programming event, as well as a contest to pitch, program, and present instances of prototype digital innovation (e.g. a prototype mobile application). They bring together programmers and others (interface designers, graphic designers and others) to collaborate intensively over a short period of time on software projects, increasingly to complete for funding and other forms of support (e.g. travel to attend events) for further development. Start creating the future with hacking the latest Infineon technology.

1. Choose a track

Drones Track

For the hackathon, each team participating in the drone track will be provided with an ready-to-fly multicopter including accessories such as batteries and remote control. Each drone has a flight controller based on a 32-bit Infineon XMC 4700 microcontroller with a high-precision DPS310 pressure sensor for altitude control. Cleanflight is used as software for the flight controller.
Further innovative Infineon sensors such as a radar sensors and a 3D time-of-flight camera are available for projects.
In addition to the flight controller board, the multicopters are equipped with a Raspberry Pi 3 B+ which can be used for more complex calculations such as navigation, sensor data processing, collision avoidance, gesture control, facial recognition ...
The interface between Raspberry pi and flight controller is the Multiwii Serial Protocol.

Here are a few suggestions what could be realized with the copters:

  • Collision avoidance
  • Automatic landing - finding a possible landing site with 3D camera
  • Flying around or flying through obstacles such as race gates
  • Follow an object (e.g. another drone)

Of course these are only a few suggestions and we are looking forward to your own creative ideas.

Minimal required team skills:

  • Programming in C/C++ and a basic understanding of OpenCV is neccessary to access the 3D camera
  • A basic understanding of the flight dynamics of a multicopter is advantageous.
  • It is not necessary to program the flight controller but if you like you are very welcome 😉

Sensors Track

Use one of the following Infineon sensors or maker kits to create a working prototype.

Infineon Maker Kits

3D Image Sensor (ToF - Time-of-Flight)

Radar (24GHz)

Minimal required team skills: Maker kits (Arduino/C++), ToF (Raspberry Pi/C++ or Python), Radar (Arduino/C)

Application ideas for this track are: a radar activated lamp or gesture control with a 3D image sensor.

Blockchain Track

Infineon’s Blockchain Security 2Go starter kit provides a fast and easy way to build best-in-class security into your blockchain system design from scratch. User credentials are protected by a security controller offering highest security levels, which can be accessed via NFC.

Blockchain Security 2Go starter kit

Minimal required team skills: basic programming skills (for Android or Raspberry Pi)

Application ideas for this track are porting an existing open source NFC wallet app from Ethereum to other crypto tokens (like Bitcoin), or creating blockchain prototypes for virtual notary, access control, voting, or geocaching.

2. Brainstorm your idea

Tell us about your concept right away or brainstorm application ideas at the hackathon. Please submit your ideas in the following application form.

3. Apply now

Send us your convincing hackathon application. Applicants will be accepted on a first come, first served basis.

The application period has ended.

Prizes

Pioneers prize

Pioneers will award three tickets for Pioneers'19 to the best start-up / team.

Pioneers establishes and facilitates direct, meaningful business relationships between startups, corporate executives, and investors to foster growth and innovation.

more prizes

We think that the overall hackathon participation should be worth alone participating in the event. However there will be a maker and a further startup prize, as well as cool hardware prizes.

FAQ

Which people will be selected for the hackathon?
This depends on your application, your person and the competition in your track.

May I keep the product I got during the hackathon?
This depends on the technology you will use at the hackathon.

Do I have to come to Graz to attend the hackathon?
Yes, you will have to be present in Graz to attend the hackathon. However in 2019 we will offer another community engagement format with Industry meets Makers, which will allow virtual participation.

Where will it be possible to test the drones?
There will be a 20x25 meter area in Stadthalle Graz to test & fly the drones.

Is the hackathon accessible via wheelchair?
Yes.

What about parking?
Check out a map of the parking possibilities. The fee for the parking garage on Monday has to be covered by yourself, as it is not yet reserved for the conference.

What about the hackathon culture?
Please stick to the Code of Conduct of Austrian Startups to engage in a respectuful collaboration.
